The fossil festival is a celebration of fossils, geology and marine life which takes place every year in the vibrant seaside town of Lyme Regis.
The festival offers something for all ages from young children to the most experienced fossil enthusiast.
Obviously, a weekend in Lyme Regis is always popular, but there are even more reasons to visit on the first May Bank Holiday weekend.
Activities are happening at the Lyme Regis Museum, Woodmead Halls and around the town itself with something for everyone.
Whether you’re interested in geology, the life of Mary Anning or the impact of climate change, you will find a talk to suit you.
Moreover, there are also some excellent storytelling and art activities for younger visitors!
The educational walks, discussions and talks feature wide ranging topics.
From learning about the marine life 200 million years ago, to appreciating how our geology can help us tackle the impact of climate change, learning about our geology impacts on so many areas.
Equally, the free of charge walks along the coast with Jim Thomas and Richard Edmonds are in themselves a great reason to visit.
Certainly, we are lucky to have such a wealth of knowledge and experience of all things geological living in the area.
Did you know that around £60 million has been spent in the last 30 years to protect Lyme Regis?
Learn about this and so much more at the fossil festival!
Discover ancient marine life through Jurassic finds such as ichthyosaurs, plesiosaurs, and monosaurs.
Explore the rich geological heritage of the area and learn about the landscape here millions of years ago.
Additionally, learn about influential Mary Anning – a key local figure, paleontologist and fossil collector.
Understand the region’s unique geology, and the lessons it can give us about climate change.
For younger visitors there are creative art sessions, interactive activities and story telling to inspire the next generation.
Besides authors, artists to inspire with stories of dinosaurs and creative activities, there are paleontologists to teach young geologists how to prepare their latest finds.
Equally there are plenty of opportunities to learn for all ages!
Fossil hunting walks are a great way to learn about the coastline, and find some 200 million year old souvenirs…
Plus, there’s the chance to meet a Tyrannosaurus Rex… Rexy the T-Rex will be out to meet visitors over the weekend.
The Jurassic Coast in the South of England is a world-renowned destination for fossil hunting enthusiasts.
Additionally, this stretch of coastline along the English Channel spans 95 miles and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The rocks along this coast contain a wealth of fossils that date back to the Jurassic period, around 200 million years ago.
They are so abundant that you can collect many fossils such as ammonites, belamites and iron pyrite as you walk along the beach.
Evidently the beaches of Charmouth and Lyme Regis are must-visit destinations for any fossil hunting enthusiast. The annual Lyme Regis fossil festival 29th and 30th April is the perfect time!
After enjoying the fossil festival, Lyme Regis is rich with other activities for the perfect weekend away.
Its location on the border of West Dorset and East Devon benefits from the many local food and drinks producers of the regions.
Micro breweries, locally made gins, rum and wines compliment the delicious dishes by acclaimed local chefs using local produce including, of course, locally caught seafood.
There are so many delicious options to choose from, you will need more than a weekend to do them justice! But here are a few to consider…
For sea views while you dine, then a visit to the Lyme Bay Café, or Swim would be great choices.
Or enjoy a coffee and cake from Kiosk or fish and chips from Herbies and enjoy them at the beach
In the old town, our guests love The Millside and the Strawberry Tree, located near the Town Mill and the Lyme Regis micro brewery.
