The South West Coast path passes a few hundred metres from our front door, so there is no excuse not to leave the car parked in our ample free parking for your stay with us, and enjoy a walk!
Short walks
If you fancy a short stroll, the land on Fern Hill offers over 30 acres of unspoilt meadows, ponds and woodlands to explore. Since the land is left natural, it is perfect for spotting wildlife – from rare moths and butterflies to kingfisher, buzzards, kestrels, and Roe deer. It’s a great place to sit and just relax – with expansive views over the rolling Dorset countryside, you could almost imagine it was 100 years ago as the birds sing and the sea rolls gently in the distance.
Walking the Jurassic Coastal Path through Fernhill woods to the clifftops is a short 20 minutes and gives you the most breath-taking views along the South Coast towards Portland, or down to Lyme Regis – with views almost as good as those from the top of Golden Cap!
Picking up the Jurassic Coastal Path
Less than 400 metres from our front door, you can join the South West Coast Path heading East towards Charmouth, Golden Cap, Seatown and West Bay. Heading West is the historic town of Lyme Regis, the jungle-like Undercliffs to Seaton and on to Beer, Branscombe and Sidmouth.
If you love to walk, there is no end to the distances you can cover on the South West Coast Path! Or if you just want to tackle a small section, the X53 and X51 Jurassic Coastal bus can take you to a specific point on the route for you to enjoy.
Fernhill is an ideal base to cover around 50 miles of this 630-mile long coastal path – with the warm welcome, wholesome menus and welcoming bar at Fernhill to reward you each evening!
We have all the information you need to make the most of a days’ walking – whether it is a leisurely stroll with a pub en-route for lunch, or an inland hike to enjoy this unspoiled countryside (also, often with a pub or café on the route for you to enjoy!)
Inland walks from our doorstep
If you have already completed the Jurassic coastal path and you’re looking for something new to enjoy, you could follow the Wessex Ridgeway (62 miles from Ashmore to Lyme Regis), East Devon Way (38 miles from Exmouth to Lyme Regis) or one of the many circular walks which can be found close by.
